Melbourne, Florida is a coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean in Central Florida located
in Brevard County, roughly an hour drive south of the world famous Kennedy Space
Center. Melbourne was formed as the result of several smaller cities merging together
in 1969 to form the one cohesive local government that has become the city we recognize
today. It is estimated to have a population around 79,000, not including the unincorporated
areas of the city. Nearly 75% of the 41 square miles within city limits is currently
being used, and that percentage grows every day.
The city of Melbourne, FL was originally a training ground for Confederate soldiers
during the American Civil War, but attracted by the ocean and multitude of rivers
and streams, the soldiers decided to return to the area once the war had concluded.
They were able to purchase the land for a mere five cents per acre, and the city
of Melbourne, FL was born. While the city was named after Melbourne, Australia,
the founder was originally an English postmaster, the first postmaster in the area,
who had simply spent a great deal of time in the country of Australia. Honoring
it’s European roots, a large Oktoberfest is held in the city every year hosting
a large number of visitors. Though the number of patrons for this event is impressive,
perhaps the largest draw every year is the Melbourne, Florida Arts Festival. This
event, held every April, boasts an attendance in excess of 50,000 visitors from
every corner of the globe.
In the past, Forbes magazine has listed Melbourne, Florida as one of the top 20
areas for home appreciation in the entire country, and first in Florida. This is
due, in part, to the lovely climate, small-town atmosphere, excellent parks, and
top area high schools. There are at least 17 parks and recreational areas within
the Melbourne area and nine private and public high schools and academies.
